"Teacher, I don't know what to write."
"I have to write about what I read? I don't know what to say." I'm sure you've never heard those statements before right? I think asking a students to respond about their reading in words is one of the most difficult tasks. Many just don't know how to put their words together. I find my self spending a lot of one -on- one time with students when it comes to this.
With Common Core pushing more and more writing, I started to think about how I could give my students some "training wheels" when it comes to responding to their reading. I decided to create a writing frame that would guide their thinking but allow them the opportunity to explain it at the same time. Some students may need to master a graphic organizer first but my hope is that later in the year I can take their "training wheels" away.
I thought I'd include it for you to try out with your students. Students with learning disabilities or those that are ESOL could greatly benefit from something like this. I've got many more on the horizon so stay tuned for more. :)
