This week I introduced decimals to my 3rd graders. They still have such a hard time ever imagining that a decimal is less than a whole or part of a whole. We practiced adding money earlier in the year, but I guess it's just still so abstract. So after doing lots of modeling with them in their math journals by shading in decimal models and writing the decimal that matches, I wanted to do something a little more fun. (Decimals can by a bit dry to teach.) I forgot that in the past I used to have my students create their own "Decimal Garden". They loved it. It also gave me another opportunity to integrate creating keys, reading graphs, and talk about eating healthy. Check it out on my TpT store.
